A Mythological Depiction of Samudra Manthan in Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Mangalgiri Silk - Where art is not framed, it is draped.
Step into the legendary tale of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean, where Devas and Asuras come together in a richly expressive Kalamkari narrative. Divine strength, cosmic struggle, and the emergence of Goddess Lakshmi come alive in a scene filled with drama, symbolism, and timeless storytelling.
This exquisite Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Mangalgiri silk saree depicts the celebrated episode on a vivid emerald-green ground: the serpent Vasuki coiled around Mount Mandara as the Devas and Asuras pull at either end, with Lord Vishnu's Kurma avatar steadying the mountain below. At the centre, Goddess Lakshmi rises amid lotus blooms, flanked by celestial elephants and winged horses, while the ivory pallu above carries a host of celestial figures looking on from the heavens. Delicate lotus-vine borders in ivory frame the composition above and below, completing the mythological tableau.
The artwork is framed by rich coral-red borders with warm gold detailing, creating a striking contrast against the emerald body and ivory pallu. The interplay of the vivid green narrative ground, luminous ivory field, and vibrant hand-painted figures gives the saree a distinctive character, narrative, symbolic, and artistically compelling.
Color - A vivid emerald-green Kalamkari body paired with a luminous ivory pallu, illuminated with vibrant shades of blue, pink, mustard-yellow, purple, teal, and coral. Rich coral-red borders with gold detailing bring warmth and structure to the palette.
Technique - The beauty of Srikalahasthi Kalamkari lies in its extraordinary line work. Traditionally drawn with a kalam, or bamboo pen, the imagery is built through expressive outlines and intricate detailing. Every divine figure, Gopi, bird, flower, leaf, ornament, and flowing vine is carefully articulated, giving the saree the character of a hand-drawn work of art.
Fabric - Mangalgiri silk, known for its elegant texture, graceful drape, natural sheen, and beautiful ability to showcase detailed Kalamkari artwork and rich woven borders.
Craft - A magnificent Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Mangalgiri silk saree, depicting Samudra Manthan in Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Mangalgiri Silk
Blouse - An unstitched blouse piece in the same fabric as the saree is included.
The Artful Finish - Ready to wear, with fall and pico neatly done. The pallu is completed with handmade silk tassels, adding a graceful final flourish.
Care - Store folded in a soft cotton or muslin cloth and recommended to refold every 3 months. Keep away from perfume, direct sunlight and moisture. Professional dry cleaning is recommended to preserve the richness of art and the silk. With Kalahasthi Kalamkari, art is not framed, it is draped.
A Note on Handmade Beauty
No two hand painted sarees are ever exactly alike. Subtle variations in colour, texture, embroidery, and finish are part of their charm, the quiet signature of the hands that created them. Colors and textures may also appear slightly different depending on lighting, photography, screen settings, and other viewing conditions.
Every motif tells a story. Every stitch carries the artisan’s touch. And when you drape it, that story becomes yours.
