Kalahasti Kalamkari - Cream with Purple

Regular price

$515.00 USD

A Procession of Sacred Cows in Pichwai Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Ikkat Silk Saree - With Srikalahasthi Kalamkari, art is not framed, it is draped.

Step into a world of joyful movement and devotional richness of Pichwai and the expressive artistry of Srikalahasthi Kalamkari, where a procession of beautifully ornamented cows fills the saree with colour and character, surrounded by delicate foliage, floral elements, and intricate decorative details.

The saree combines the hand-drawn storytelling of Srikalahasthi Kalamkari with the geometric rhythm of Ikkat. The upper section is richly illustrated with a dense procession of cows, while the border transitions into a beautifully structured Ikkat-inspired diamond pattern in deep purple, green, and mustard. This meeting of figurative storytelling and geometric textile design gives the saree a wonderfully contemporary yet deeply traditional character.

The rich deep purple and gold borders provide a regal frame to the vibrant artwork. The Pichwai influence brings with it a sense of devotion, prosperity, abundance, and pastoral beauty. Cows are among the most enduring motifs in Indian devotional art, often associated with the sacred landscape of Vrindavan and the world of Krishna. Here, the motif is reimagined through the colourful, expressive language of Kalamkari.

SILK MARK CERTIFIED

Color - A rich deep-purple base accented with turquoise, teal, soft pink, yellow, mustard, olive green, sky blue, lavender, grey, ivory, and touches of crimson. The contrasting palette creates a playful, festive, and richly layered visual effect.

Technique - Srikalahasti Kalamkari is a freehand, hand-painted textile art created using bamboo kalam and natural dyes. The fabric is treated with buffalo milk and myrobalan to prevent color bleeding, then the design is sketched by hand with charcoal and outlined using a natural iron-and-jaggery black dye. Artisans meticulously fill the motifs with natural colors such as madder red, pomegranate yellow, and indigo blue, using alum as a mordant to fix the dyes. Unlike block-printed Kalamkari, every element is drawn and painted by hand, making each piece a unique expression of traditional storytelling and craftsmanship.

Fabric - Ikkat silk, valued for its luxurious texture, graceful drape, natural sheen, and vibrant colour. The silk provides an elegant foundation for the detailed Kalamkari artwork and the structured geometric Ikkat pattern.

Craft - A richly detailed Pichwai-inspired Srikalahasthi Kalamkari Ikkat silk saree, bringing together a colourful procession of sacred cows, expressive hand-drawn details, geometric Ikkat patterns, and ornate purple-and-gold borders. A beautiful celebration of devotional art, traditional craftsmanship, and the timeless storytelling heritage of Indian textiles.

Blouse - An unstitched blouse piece in the same fabric as the saree is included.

The Artful Finish - Ready to wear, with fall and pico neatly done. The pallu is completed with handmade silk tassels, adding a graceful final flourish.

Care: Store folded in a soft cotton or muslin cloth and recommended to refold every 3 months. Keep away from perfume, direct sunlight and moisture. Professional dry cleaning is recommended to preserve the richness of art and the silk. With Kalahasthi Kalamkari, art is not framed, it is draped.

A Note on Handmade Beauty

No two hand-painted sarees are ever exactly alike. Subtle variations in colour, texture, embroidery, and finish are part of their charm, the quiet signature of the hands that created them. Colors and textures may also appear slightly different depending on lighting, photography, screen settings, and other viewing conditions.

Every motif tells a story. Every stitch carries the artisan’s touch. And when you drape it, that story becomes yours.
